Shock and Concern in Mallow After Man’s Body Discovered in Ballyellis

Shock and concern have spread through Mallow following the discovery of a man’s body in Ballyellis, close to residential housing, a creche, a golf club and a riverside walkway regularly used by dog walkers.

Local representatives have spoken of the distress felt by residents following the discovery, which prompted a significant Garda operation in the area near Mallow’s wastewater treatment plant.

Eoghan Kenny TD said the incident had left him deeply shocked and saddened, with particular concern for people living in nearby housing estates.

“As both a local representative and someone from Mallow, I share the shock and concern being felt by residents, particularly those living in the surrounding housing estates. An incident of this nature, so close to people’s homes, is deeply distressing for our community,” he said.

Independent Ireland TD Ken O’Flynn, who lives in Mallow, said the discovery had sent shockwaves through the town.

“Everybody is shocked and everybody is talking about it. We’re a very close community, and when something like this happens it rocks the whole town,” he said.

Both representatives expressed their thoughts for the family and loved ones of the deceased, while emphasising the importance of allowing An Garda Síochána to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Mr O’Flynn urged people not to speculate or share rumours online, warning that doing so could cause further distress to the family and potentially hinder the investigation.

“I’d ask people not to speculate or share rumours online. That can cause real hurt to a family and can make the investigation harder,” he said.

He also appealed to anyone with information that could assist Gardaí to contact Mallow Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line.

Mr Kenny said residents should receive appropriate information and reassurance as the investigation progresses, adding that he intended to raise concerns expressed locally directly with An Garda Síochána.

The man’s body was discovered at approximately 1.30pm along a riverside walkway in Ballyellis, close to the River Blackwater and the wastewater treatment plant.

Gardaí are treating the death as suspicious and are continuing efforts to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding his death.

The scene was sealed off as investigators began examining the area for evidence. Members of the Garda Technical Bureau travelled from Dublin to assist with the forensic examination, accompanied by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster.

The Garda Water Unit also attended, bringing a rigid inflatable boat as part of the operation.

The body was subsequently removed from the scene and taken to Cork University Hospital. A post-mortem examination is expected to help establish the cause of death.

An incident room has been established at Mallow Garda Station as the investigation continues.

The discovery has brought considerable concern to an area used by local residents for walking and recreation. While the circumstances remain under investigation, local representatives have urged people to respect the privacy of the deceased’s family and allow Gardaí to carry out their inquiries.

Mr O’Flynn said the Gardaí had his full support and expressed confidence that investigators would work to establish the facts.
