North Cork households urged to act as energy upgrade demand surges

Households across North Cork are being encouraged to take advantage of Government-backed home energy upgrade grants as new CSO figures underline the continued reliance on oil and gas heating in rural Ireland.

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea said families in areas including Mallow, Kanturk, Doneraile, Banteer and Killavullen should closely examine the supports now available to help reduce energy bills and improve home comfort.

Latest CSO data shows a clear divide between urban and rural heating systems. While mains gas remains the dominant fuel in towns and cities, heating oil continues to be the primary source in rural homes, with more than 60% of households in western and border regions still dependent on oil-based systems. The report also highlights that just 15% of homes nationwide have solar installations, while heat pumps have become standard in over 80% of homes built since 2020, underlining the gap between older housing stock and modern construction.

Deputy O’Shea said the range of grants now available represents a significant opportunity for homeowners across North Cork.

He said upgrades such as insulation, new windows and doors, heat pumps and solar panels can make a substantial difference to both energy costs and overall home comfort, while also improving long-term energy efficiency.

Demand for energy upgrade schemes has increased sharply in recent months. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, more than 29,000 applications were processed, representing a 96% increase year-on-year. This included over 10,000 applications for solar PV systems, more than 7,000 for windows and doors, and continued strong growth in insulation and heat pump installations.

A range of grants is currently available to homeowners, including up to €2,000 for attic insulation, up to €8,000 for wall insulation, up to €4,000 for windows, €1,600 for doors, up to €12,500 for heat pumps, and up to €1,800 for solar PV systems.

Deputy O’Shea also highlighted the Warmer Homes Scheme, which provides fully funded energy upgrades for eligible households, including those in receipt of the Fuel Allowance. The scheme is designed to support those most at risk of energy poverty by delivering free insulation and heating improvements where required.

He encouraged households across North Cork to check their eligibility and engage with the available supports as demand continues to rise.
