A Buttevant teenager’s fight to access life-changing treatment has inspired a special 80s disco fundraiser, with the community coming together next month to support Paudie Coady and his family.
The 80s Night for Paudie Coady will take place on Saturday, August 29 at the Talbot Hotel Midleton, with all proceeds from the event going towards supporting the Coady family.
Hosted by MC Fanta, with DJ Alan O’Sullivan providing a night of classic 80s hits, organisers are promising an evening of music, nostalgia and fun, all in aid of an important cause.
Guests are encouraged to embrace the decade with their best retro outfits, from neon leg warmers to big hair, as the event aims to bring people together while raising awareness and support for Paudie’s ongoing battle.
Paudie, aged 16, is living with Friedreich’s ataxia, a rare genetic condition that progressively affects the nervous system and impacts mobility and independence.
His father Craig Coady previously lost his son Rory to the same illness last year and continues to care for Paudie while campaigning for access to treatment that could help slow the progression of the condition.
The treatment, Skyclarys, has been approved for use in the European Union and has shown positive results in slowing the progression of Friedreich’s ataxia. However, access for Irish patients depends on a decision by the HSE regarding reimbursement of the medication.
Speaking recently on Cork’s 96FM Opinion Line, Craig described the devastating impact the condition has had on his family and the urgency of securing access to treatment while Paudie still has the opportunity to benefit.
He explained how everyday activities that many families take for granted have become increasingly challenging, describing a recent trip to Garretstown Beach where Paudie was unable to walk on the sand due to the effects of his condition.
Alongside caring for Paudie, Craig’s wife Della is also receiving full-time care in Dublin due to the advanced stages of Huntington’s disease.
The upcoming fundraiser aims to provide practical support for the family while giving the wider community an opportunity to show solidarity.
