Mallow General Hospital has marked a significant milestone with the opening of 24 newly completed inpatient beds, increasing the hospital’s overall capacity from 71 to 95 beds.
The development has been welcomed by local public representatives and healthcare staff, who say it represents an important step forward for patient care and service delivery in North Cork and the wider Munster region.
The new inpatient rooms are single-occupancy facilities, a design intended to improve patient comfort, privacy, and infection control standards. The expansion is also expected to help ease pressure on the acute hospital system by improving patient flow and increasing access to local inpatient services.
Local TD Eoghan Kenny described the opening as a “very important milestone” for the hospital, thanking the teams involved in delivering the project, including HSE South West. He said he will continue to advocate for Mallow General Hospital to remain a priority for future investment and development.
Separately, Cork North West TD John Paul O’Shea welcomed the arrival of the first patients into the new units, calling it a “significant and very positive expansion” of local healthcare capacity. He noted that the increase in beds will help improve access to timely care and support services closer to home.
Local councillor Tony O’Shea also highlighted the broader development of the hospital, pointing to ongoing upgrades that have steadily expanded inpatient facilities in recent years.
The latest phase of expansion follows previous investment in single-occupancy inpatient rooms and forms part of a continued effort to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the region.
