Chadwicks Mallow Linked to Parent Group Expansion Following Cygnum Acquisition

Chadwicks, which operates a branch in Mallow at Shortcastle Street, Annabella (P51 T972), is part of wider developments within its parent company Grafton Group following the acquisition of timber-frame specialist Cygnum.
The deal forms part of Grafton’s strategy to strengthen its position in the Irish construction sector, particularly as demand grows for modern methods of construction. With Government targets aiming to deliver 300,000 new homes by 2030, timber-frame and modular building approaches are playing an increasingly significant role in residential development.
Cygnum, based in Macroom and established in 1997, specialises in the design and manufacture of made-to-order timber-frame systems for developers. The company reported revenues of approximately €45.6 million last year, with strong operating margins reflecting its position within the growing off-site construction market.
Grafton, which also owns the Chadwicks network of builders’ merchants as well as Woodie’s DIY and garden retailers, said the acquisition is expected to complement its existing trade-focused offering.
The group operates 64 Chadwicks branches across Ireland, including its Mallow location, which serves as a key supplier for builders, contractors and trade customers in North Cork.
Industry trends show a marked increase in the use of timber-frame construction in Ireland, particularly in low-rise housing. Figures from the Department of Housing indicate that usage has risen significantly in recent years, reflecting a shift towards faster, more efficient building techniques supported by policy and market demand.
The integration of Cygnum into the Chadwicks and wider Grafton Group portfolio is expected to enhance the group’s ability to provide a broader range of construction solutions, particularly in the new-build residential sector. Analysts suggest the move aligns with ongoing consolidation in the construction supply chain, as companies position themselves to support increased housing output across the country.
