Ken O’Flynn TD Calls for Carbon Tax Pause Amid Middle East Tensions

Independent Ireland TD Ken O’Flynn has called on the Government to pause the carbon tax on petrol and diesel, citing rising global energy prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

O’Flynn highlighted the potential impact of instability around the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any disruption could push oil prices higher. He said this would directly increase household fuel bills, transport costs, and general prices in shops across Ireland.

“Ireland is already one of the most expensive countries in Europe for electricity and gas. Households are stretched. Small businesses are operating on tight margins. Rural communities depend on their cars,” O’Flynn said.

He emphasised that Independent Ireland does not support the carbon tax and argued that, given the current global energy uncertainty, the Government should pause the tax on petrol and diesel immediately for a defined emergency period until global markets stabilise.

“You cannot ask Irish families to absorb a global supply shock and domestic fuel taxes at the same time. Protect households. Protect enterprise. Act now,” he said.
