Mallow EuroGiant store faces uncertainty as retailer enters liquidation

The future of Mallow’s EuroGiant store is now uncertain after the major discount retailer entered liquidation, putting hundreds of jobs at risk across the country. The Mallow branch is among 77 stores operated by the chain, which employs over 640 people nationwide.

The High Court appointed liquidators this afternoon, with Mark Degnan and Brendan O’Reilly of Interpath tasked with overseeing the process. The Mallow store will remain open for now while the liquidation review continues.

EuroGiant, which opened its first store in Dublin in 1990, has grown over nearly 40 years to become a familiar name in towns across Ireland, including Mallow. Founder Charlie O’Loughlin described the day as “very hard,” saying: “I founded this business over 30 years ago and I never imagined it would end like this.”

A company spokesperson explained that rising rent, day-to-day operating costs, and increased competition in the retail sector meant the business was “no longer viable in its current form.”
