A major upgrade of Mallow’s water infrastructure has been completed on Fair Street, with over a kilometre of ageing water mains replaced as part of a near €2 million investment in the town’s network.
The works, delivered by Uisce Éireann, involved installing larger, modern pipes designed to improve water supply reliability while also creating additional capacity to support future housing and commercial growth in the area. The improved network is expected to reduce the risk of leaks and burst mains, issues that had affected parts of the town in recent years.
Local sources say the upgraded infrastructure will play an important role in unlocking development potential in Mallow, with capacity now in place to accommodate new residential schemes — including the possibility of up to 130 additional homes. The project underlines Mallow’s continued positioning as a key market town and service centre in North Cork.
While the works required extensive ground disruption on one of the town’s busy roads, the project has now been fully completed and the upgraded mains are operational. Construction was carried out by Ward and Burke Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
The investment forms part of wider national efforts to modernise water services and ensure towns outside major cities have the infrastructure required to grow sustainably. In Mallow’s case, the completed Fair Street upgrade strengthens resilience in the local supply network and supports long-term planning objectives for housing delivery.
Residents and businesses affected during construction have been thanked for their cooperation while works were underway, with the improved system now expected to deliver lasting benefits for the town.
