Fine Gael Councillor Tony O’Shea, who represents the Mallow Municipal District on Cork County Council, has welcomed the completion of resurfacing works on the R620 between Nazareth House, Mallow, and the Dromahane Road.
Cllr. O’Shea said he was pleased to see the improvement works carried out on a section of road that had “deteriorated considerably in recent years.”
“This is a very welcome upgrade for all road users,” he said. “I want to sincerely thank Cork County Council and the contractor for progressing and completing this important project on what is a busy and well-used route.”
While acknowledging this positive development, Cllr. O’Shea also raised concerns about heavy goods vehicles continuing to use Mallow town centre as a shortcut, adding to congestion and safety concerns.
“Heavy goods vehicles are still cutting through the town centre, creating serious traffic congestion, air pollution, and safety risks for pedestrians and local drivers,” he said. “This situation is not acceptable, and it needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.”
Cllr. O’Shea is calling on Cork County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to take immediate steps to enforce weight restrictions, improve signage, and prioritise a proper bypass solution to divert HGV traffic away from the town centre.
“Mallow deserves better,” he added. “Our town centre should be for people, not constant heavy traffic.”
