Six more years. Another election cycle. That’s how long the people of Mallow are being told to wait before the long-promised and much-needed Mallow Relief Road is finally delivered.
The update comes as new housing developments across the town continue to receive planning permission, and as the long-discussed Cork to Limerick Motorway remains just that: discussed.
At a recent public meeting, Eoghan Kenny provided an update on the progress of the N72/N73 Mallow Relief Road, outlining ongoing efforts to keep the long-delayed project moving.
“Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have confirmed that the Preliminary Business Case is expected in early 2026,” Kenny said. “But I have to say, I’m deeply disappointed at the lack of real progress.”
He added that the project should have been treated as a stand-alone priority in Budget 2026, criticising the Government for failing to deliver on a project seen as crucial to Mallow’s future.
“This road isn’t just about convenience,” Kenny said. “It’s about safety, connectivity, and economic opportunity for Mallow and North Cork. The people here deserve better, and I’ll keep fighting in opposition to ensure it finally becomes a reality.”
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about serious traffic and speeding issues at Sextons Boreen, a busy route used by pupils and parents from both Gaelscoil Thomáis Dáibhís and Davis College.
Kenny said he has been contacted by many parents worried about road safety in the area.
“I’ve raised this issue with the local area engineer and requested that Cork County Council review the situation and implement traffic calming measures to improve safety for all children, parents, and road users,” he said.
He confirmed he will be in contact with both schools this week to discuss the matter and will work alongside Cllr Ronan Sheehan to ensure progress is made.
“We’ll keep the community updated as information becomes available,” Kenny added.
