Mallow’s McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC campaign has taken an early turn into a battle for progression after an opening-round defeat to Douglas, combined with a major result elsewhere in the group as Carrigaline defeated reigning champions St Finbarr’s.
The 4-9 to 0-13 loss to Douglas in Grenagh leaves Mallow with no margin for error as they look to secure a place in the knockout stages of a highly competitive group.
Mallow started the contest strongly and showed why they entered the championship with ambitions of making an impact, leading for much of the opening half.
Jack Dillon got Mallow off to the perfect start with a two-pointer from the throw-in, before Sean McDonnell and Mark Tobin added further scores to help Mallow build a 0-5 to 0-1 advantage after 19 minutes.
However, Douglas gradually grew into the game and began to turn the momentum before half-time. Seán Coakley’s penalty after Shane Kingston was fouled gave Douglas the lead for the first time, leaving Mallow trailing by the narrowest of margins at the interval.
Mallow responded after the restart, with Kevin Sheehan converting a free to level proceedings at 0-8 to 1-5, but Douglas produced a decisive second-half performance.
The City side found another level after the break, with Luis Dwan Fogarty finishing a flowing move involving Shane Kingston to register Douglas’ second goal. Further scores followed, with Adam Cantwell adding another major as Mallow struggled to contain Douglas’ attacking threat.
Despite battling efforts, Mallow were unable to find a way through a well-organised Douglas defence, which limited clear goal-scoring opportunities throughout the second half.
Seán Coakley sealed the victory with Douglas’ fourth goal, completing a personal tally of 2-4, as Mallow were left to reflect on missed chances after a promising opening period.
For Mallow, Kevin Sheehan top-scored with four points, while Mark Tobin, Sean McDonnell and Ciarán Mullins also contributed to the scoreboard.
The significance of the result was increased by events in the other group fixture, where Carrigaline produced one of the opening round’s biggest shocks by defeating reigning champions St Finbarr’s.
With the group now wide open, Mallow will need to respond in their remaining fixtures as they look to progress from a challenging McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC group.
