Ballyhooly-based Blackwater Honey has created “Your First Year With Bees”, a 22-video series aimed at people considering beekeeping and those preparing to take on their first colony.
The series takes viewers through the practical realities of a first year with bees, covering everything from choosing a hive and sourcing bees to carrying out inspections, monitoring colony health and preparing for winter.
It also looks at some of the key decisions new beekeepers will face, including feeding, adding additional boxes and managing mites.
For those interested in the rewards of beekeeping, the series also follows the journey towards potentially harvesting a first crop of honey.
Blackwater Honey says the videos are intended as a starting point rather than a replacement for hands-on experience or guidance from an experienced local beekeeper.
The aim is to give beginners a clearer understanding of the time, equipment, responsibilities and challenges involved, while helping them approach their first year with realistic expectations.
