Avondhu 3-05 (3-1-3)
Beara 1-07 (1-1-5)
A powerful second-half surge proved decisive as Avondhu pulled clear of Beara to secure victory in Round 2 of the McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC at Ovens on Tuesday evening.
In a contest shaped as much by the conditions as the quality on display, Beara looked the more composed side for long stretches of the opening half and deservedly led at the break. However, once Avondhu found their rhythm after the restart, they showed a level of firepower that ultimately put daylight between the sides.
With rain falling heavily throughout, scores were hard-earned early on. Avondhu opened through Mark Lenahan, but the game soon settled into a scrappy, stop-start pattern as both teams struggled for fluency on a slick surface.
Beara grew into the contest and began to dictate proceedings, with Fintan Fenner influential in attack. Points from Tomás Murphy, James Spencer and Fenner helped them build a lead, while a missed goal opportunity from Ben O’Sullivan left the door slightly ajar.
Avondhu capitalised before the interval, striking for a timely goal when Conor Hanlon finished a well-worked move. Even so, Beara held a 0-6 to 1-1 advantage at half-time and could justifiably feel they had left more scores behind them.
That sense of missed opportunity became more apparent as the second half unfolded.
A long-range two-pointer from Lenahan quickly brought Avondhu back on terms, and from there the momentum shifted. With David and Conor Hanlon becoming more influential and Lenahan continuing to find his range, Avondhu began to take control.
The turning point came in the closing quarter when Ben Twomey struck for 1-1 in quick succession, giving Avondhu a commanding lead. His second goal, a composed finish over the advancing goalkeeper, effectively ended the contest.
Beara rallied late on, with Alan Elphick and a Fenner penalty adding to their tally, but by then the result was beyond doubt.
Avondhu’s greater scoring threat in the second half proved the difference, as they finished strongly to claim the win and set up a Round 3 meeting with Imokilly.
