Mourneabbey trio Laura Walsh, Éimear Walsh and Lauren Finnegan played leading roles as Cork retained the ZuCar All-Ireland Minor A Ladies Football Championship with a 0-11 to 0-7 victory over Roscommon at Glenisk O’Connor Park, Tullamore, on Saturday.
Captain Laura Walsh had the honour of lifting the All-Ireland trophy after producing another outstanding performance, finishing as Cork’s top scorer with five points. Clubmate Lauren Finnegan also got on the scoresheet with a crucial second-half point, while Éimear Walsh was a key figure in a disciplined Cork defence as the Rebels secured successive All-Ireland minor crowns.
The victory sees Cork retain the national title won in 2025, while also adding to this year’s Munster Championship success under manager Kieran O’Shea.
In a closely fought contest, Cork’s composure in possession and clinical finishing proved decisive against a Roscommon side appearing in their first All-Ireland Minor A final since 1991.
The Rebels established a 0-6 to 0-3 lead by half-time, with scores from Sarah O’Connor and Róisín Ní Liatháin helping Cork edge clear after an evenly contested opening period.
Roscommon responded after the interval with the aid of the breeze, but Cork maintained control. Laura Walsh continued to convert her frees with accuracy before Ní Liatháin struck twice to extend Cork’s advantage.
Lauren Finnegan then added an important point midway through the second half before further Walsh frees stretched the lead to five points entering the closing stages.
Roscommon continued to battle and added two late scores, but Cork’s well-organised defence, with Éimear Walsh playing an important role, ensured there would be no late comeback as the Rebels saw out the contest to claim another All-Ireland title.
Laura Walsh finished the final as Cork’s leading scorer with five points from frees, while Róisín Ní Liatháin contributed three points. Sarah O’Connor, Caoimhe O’Donnell and Lauren Finnegan also got on the scoresheet.
The result marks Cork’s 14th All-Ireland Minor Ladies Football title and another significant achievement for Mourneabbey, with three club representatives playing pivotal roles on the county’s biggest stage.
