Championship football returns with a bang this week as Clyda Rovers and Kilshannig go toe-to-toe when they kick off the local interest in the McCarthy Insurance Group Senior A Football Championship on Wednesday night.
The neighbours meet in Charleville at 7.30pm, with both sides eager to make the perfect start to their championship campaigns in what promises to be a fiercely contested local derby.
The opening clash is just one of several involving Avondhu clubs as the Cork County Club Football Championships get underway, with a packed schedule of local derbies and crucial opening-round fixtures across the week.
Buttevant have been handed one of the toughest groups in the competition. They begin their campaign on Friday evening against local rivals Glanworth in Kildorrery at 7.15pm, before later facing Kilmurry and Ilen Rovers in a demanding group.
Mallow begin their Premier Senior Football Championship campaign on Saturday, travelling to Grenagh to face Douglas in their opening group fixture.
Elsewhere, Kanturk travel to Ballyvourney to take on Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh, while Dromtarriffe begin their Intermediate A Football Championship campaign against Naomh Abán.
The Avondhu Junior A Football Championship also gets underway this week. Clyda Rovers’ junior side travel to Churchtown on Thursday to face Deel Rovers, while Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels will look to make a winning start when they meet Kilshannig on Saturday at 6pm in Ballyhea.
Sunday evening rounds off a busy weekend with another local derby as Mallow and Charleville meet in Buttevant at 6.30pm.
Meanwhile the Duhallow Championships also set to get under way with Castlemagner chasing four in a row.
