Runners from across Cork and beyond are set to descend on Buttevant this Sunday morning as Buttevant Running Club hosts its popular 4 Mile Road Race, marking a major milestone in the club’s 10th anniversary year.
Taking place on Sunday, May 24th at 10.30am, the event has become a firm fixture in the local running calendar, attracting competitive athletes and recreational runners alike for a fast but challenging route through the town.
The four-mile loop begins on the R580 at the Kanturk road side of Buttevant before taking in New Street, the R522 and The Crossroads, with a testing climb between miles two and three before finishing near the Buttevant GAA pitch.
Organisers say the course rewards both pacing and strength, with current records held by Sean Doyle (19:49) and Carol Finn (23:22). A €100 bonus remains on offer for any runner who breaks either mark.
Prize categories are extensive, with €150 awarded to the first male and female finishers, €100 for second place and €75 for third. Additional prizes will be awarded across age categories from Over 40 to Over 80, along with juvenile and team competitions.
A key feature of the event is the club team competition, where the first four finishers from each club compete for a €200 prize and the Greenhall-sponsored perpetual trophy, along with individual plaques.
Race headquarters and parking will be based at Buttevant GAA Complex, with warm-up space available around the pitch. Post-race refreshments and prize-giving will take place in the GAA Hall.
To mark the club’s 10th anniversary, all participants will also receive a limited-edition commemorative t-shirt as part of their entry.
The Buttevant 4 Mile also forms the final race in this year’s Rebel Diamond League, a growing collaboration between Mount Hillary AC, Dromahane Road Runners, Bweeng Trail Blazers AC and Buttevant RC. The series encourages participation across local clubs, with runners completing all four events receiving a commemorative mug.
Organisers are expecting a strong turnout and are encouraging runners of all abilities to take part.
Registration remains open online.
