Garda Ombudsman Investigates Fatal Mallow Road Incident

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Office, Fiosrú, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a fatal road incident in Mallow, Co. Cork.

The collision occurred in Ballyellis around 6pm on Tuesday evening, leaving a woman with critical injuries. She was pronounced dead a short time later. Her body has since been taken to Cork University Hospital, where a postmortem examination will be carried out.

It is understood that the woman had an earlier interaction with members of An Garda Síochána prior to the collision.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that the matter has been formally referred to Fiosrú, stating: “As this matter has been referred to Fiosrú, An Garda Síochána cannot comment further.”

In a statement, Fiosrú said it received the referral yesterday from a Garda superintendent under Section 203(1) of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024. The referral followed “a fatal road incident during a Garda interaction in the County Cork Division.”

An on-call team of Fiosrú investigators attended the scene and is continuing to liaise with the woman’s family. The investigation is now being conducted under Section 208(1)(b) of the same Act.

Fiosrú said that, as inquiries are ongoing, no further information can be released at this stage.
