Condolences have flooded in across North Cork and further afield following the sudden passing of Rory Coady, a talented young footballer from Lisgriffin, Buttevant.
Rory came to prominence in 2020 when videos of his football drill training at home during the pandemic showcased his natural talent and dedication.
Local clubs where Rory played have led the tributes. Mallow United AFC said it was with “heartbreaking sadness” that they mourned his unexpected passing, noting his clear passion for the game and extending deepest sympathy to the Coady family. Mallow Town FC, where Rory began playing at just five years old, described him as a “talented and dedicated footballer” who always listened, worked hard, and earned the respect of teammates and coaches alike. His current club, Buttevant Soccer Club, where he played on the Under-14 team, remembered him as “a vibrant and talented teammate” whose presence on the field would be sorely missed. They highlighted his contribution to last year’s league title win and spoke of his exceptional skill and dedication in every match, adding that his spirit and memory would forever remain part of the club.
Rory will be deeply missed by his parents, Craig and Della (née Walshe), his brother Paudie, grandparents, extended family, relatives, neighbours, schoolmates, and friends.
A solemn announcement was made by O’Connell Funeral Home: Rory passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on 21st September at home with his family. He was the much-adored son of Craig and Della and loving brother of Paudie, predeceased by his grandfather Padraig Walshe.
Rory will be lying in repose at O’Connell’s Funeral Home, St. James’ Avenue, Mallow, on Wednesday, 24th September from 5pm, with prayers at 8.15pm. Reception into St. Mary’s Church, Buttevant, will take place on Thursday, 25th September at 11.30am, followed by Requiem Mass at 12pm and burial afterwards in Lisgriffin Cemetery. The Funeral Mass will be streamed live on the Buttevant & Lisgriffin Pastoral Facebook Page.
The family has asked for the house to remain private and expressed heartfelt thanks to An Garda Síochána, paramedics, neighbours, and Fr. Eugene Baker for the compassion shown on the day of Rory’s passing.
