John Paul O’Shea TD has welcomed the announcement of a new Vacant Above the Shop Grant, describing it as a major opportunity to deliver much-needed housing while revitalising town and village centres across Cork North West.
The new scheme will provide grants of up to €140,000 to support the conversion of vacant or underused upper floors above shops into residential accommodation, while ensuring that ground-floor commercial units remain in active use.
Deputy O’Shea said the initiative represents a practical and fast-track solution to both the housing shortage and town centre decline.
“This is a smart, targeted measure that will help bring life back into the heart of our towns and villages,” he said. “There is huge untapped potential in the space over shops, and this grant will help property owners turn those empty floors into homes for individuals and families.”
He added that increasing residential use in town centres will have knock-on benefits for local businesses and communities.
“More people living in our town centres means increased footfall, improved safety and stronger local economies. It supports local shops, cafés and services, while also helping to create vibrant, lived-in streets.”
Deputy O’Shea confirmed that the new Vacant Above the Shop Grant is expected to be available by the end of Q1 2026. He also reminded property owners that the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant remains open and available in the meantime.
“This expanded grant recognises the importance of regeneration that works with existing buildings and communities,” he said. “It will make a real difference for towns and villages across Cork North West.”
