Mallow’s Street Angels, a leading local homelessness charity, has launched a public appeal for hot food donations as more people turn to the organisation for support. The charity, which runs regular soup kitchens and provides essentials such as fresh clothing and blankets, is seeking help from local businesses to keep up with growing demand.
Founded by Hazel Dennehy and Bernadette Murphy in 2019, Street Angels has become a lifeline for the unsheltered community, with volunteers on the streets multiple nights each week. In recent months, the charity has seen demand surge, particularly since opening its new base at Kyrl’s Quay, where they now host a regular outreach and soup run every second Monday.
“Whether it’s curry, stew, chicken, chips, or any hot dish you can spare, we would love to hear from local restaurants, chippers, and bakers,” said a spokesperson for the charity. “Even sandwiches for our Monday outreach are a huge help. The need has never been higher, and every donation directly supports people in crisis.”
The new hub, operated in partnership with Cork City Council and other local charities, provides a temporary space for those living on the streets to eat, socialise, charge devices, and receive a hot meal. While it does not offer overnight accommodation, it fills a vital gap while plans for a purpose-built homeless hub in the city centre are finalised.
Mallow’s Street Angels also expressed gratitude for the community support following a recent outreach at the new location. “We are overflowing with gratitude after our latest session at Kyrl’s Quay,” the charity said. “To our donors, Fitzpatrick, Murphy, Donatello’s, Domino’s, Baker Street, The Laundry Lab, and individual supporters like Deirdre, Nora, and Theresa, thank you. Your contributions, from rolls and pizzas to coats and cakes, are making a real difference.”
The charity also welcomed five new volunteers, including four students from UCC and a local community member, who helped serve meals, distribute supplies, and leave the site ready for the next run.
Mallow’s Street Angels’ mission is simple: to meet people where they are, offering not just supplies, but compassion, dignity, and human connection. They provide essential items such as food, water, sleeping bags, hygiene kits, and basic first aid supplies, while also supporting the emotional wellbeing of those they meet on the streets.
The charity is encouraging anyone interested in helping to donate food, essentials, or time. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps ensure that no one faces the cold, hunger, or loneliness of Cork’s streets alone.
