Mallow have successfully defended their Barnes Jewellers Avondhu U21 A Football Championship crown, edging Kilshannig by a single point in a thrilling decider at Glantane recently.
Mallow started strongly, leading by six points within the first 21 minutes and maintaining a slim lead as the game drew to a close. Despite trailing at times, Kilshannig displayed great character and came close to forcing extra time.
Key performances drove Mallow’s victory. Decky Copps, Gearóid Daly, and captain Sam Copps anchored a resolute defence, while Trevor Kiely dominated midfield. Up front, Ben O’Shea impressed with his overall play and finishing. Early scores from Kiely and Kevin O’Connell set the tone, before O’Shea netted following a slick O’Connell pass.
Kilshannig fought back, with Ben Creedon and the O’Connell brothers reducing the deficit through points and a goal. Mallow responded to maintain a narrow half-time lead of 1-6 to 0-6, with Cathal Mullins adding a crucial point before the interval.
The second half remained tense and low-scoring. Kilshannig briefly drew level through Alan O’Connell’s goal, but Mallow quickly regained the advantage thanks to Paddy Murphy and O’Shea. Kilshannig stayed in contention with late scores from Creedon, but time ultimately ran out, handing Mallow a hard-earned 1-10 to 1-9 victory.
Mallow’s triumph was built on balance, determination, and standout performances across the field, ensuring they retain the championship for another year.
