Mallow is set to benefit from a major Government roads investment following the announcement of a €234 million package for Cork.
Cork North Central TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jerry Buttimer, confirmed the funding as part of a wider €1.514 billion national allocation for roads infrastructure. Among the projects earmarked for progression is the long-anticipated Mallow Relief Road, which has received funding for preparation and study works.
The Relief Road has been a long-standing priority for the town, aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving safety, and supporting future growth. While the latest allocation focuses on advancing planning and development stages, it marks another step forward for the project.
Across Cork County, more than €138 million has been allocated, including €110 million towards the progressing M28 motorway, which Minister Buttimer said is moving “on budget and ahead of time.” Other schemes receiving funding for advancement include the Midleton–Youghal bypasses and the Great Island Connectivity Scheme in Cobh.
Speaking on the announcement, Minister Buttimer said continued investment in road infrastructure is vital for Cork’s development. He said the scale of funding reflects the Government’s commitment to balanced regional growth and strengthening Cork’s role as a key economic driver.
In addition to the Mallow Relief Road allocation, significant funding has been confirmed for works along the N72, including €1.5 million for Ballymaquirke East, €3.5 million for Clonbannin, and €1.9 million for Meenaskeha Phase 2.
On the N20 corridor, which remains a critical route through North Cork, funding has been approved for pedestrian crossings in Buttevant, improvements in Charleville, and €3.5 million for the progressing Cork to Limerick motorway project
For Mallow, however, the focus will firmly remain on the Relief Road and what this latest funding means for the future of traffic management and connectivity in the town.
