Mallow and Kanturk Shine in Cork’s 2025 Anti-Litter Challenge

North Cork was well represented at this year’s Anti-Litter Challenge awards, with Kanturk and Mallow both celebrating podium finishes in one of Cork County’s longest-running community competitions.

Kanturk claimed first place in Towns Category B, a recognition of the tireless work of local volunteers who have kept the town’s streets clean and welcoming. Mallow also earned a strong result in the same category, finishing on the podium alongside Youghal.

The annual initiative, which began in the 1990s, saw more than 170 volunteers gather at County Hall on Monday evening to celebrate community-led efforts to tackle litter across Cork. This year, 21 towns and 66 villages took part.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Mary Linehan-Foley, praised the dedication of volunteers:

“The work undertaken by voluntary community groups to keep our towns and villages free from litter does not go unnoticed. The awards night is our way of showing our appreciation to those who undertake countless hours of unpaid work.”

Cork County Council Chief Executive Moira Murrell described the Anti-Litter Challenge as one of the county’s flagship community initiatives, highlighting its role in fostering civic pride and environmental awareness.
