Jack O’Keeffe and Café Townhouse Dish Up a Glenanaar Christmas Cracker in Doneraile

Doneraile’s own culinary star Jack O’Keeffe is joining forces with The Verdant Troupe to present a truly festive experience at Café Townhouse Doneraile, a celebration that promises to blend the very best of North Cork’s culture, creativity, and cuisine.

Set within the intimate surroundings of the Townhouse, the event will unfold over a weekend filled with music, theatre, and gourmet dining as part of The Verdant Troupe’s artistic residency.

On Friday evening, classical charm will fill the air with performances by flautist Éilis O’Sullivan and classical guitarist Gerry Creedon, while Saturday night will see the acclaimed choir Various Voices deliver a stunning vocal performance.

Meanwhile, chef Jack O’Keeffe will take to the kitchen to create an exceptional multi-course menu, each dish thoughtfully paired with complimentary wines, ensuring guests enjoy a feast worthy of the season.

The weekend’s grand finale will feature a theatrical retelling of Canon Patrick Augustine Sheehan’s Glenanaar, the story that inspired generations through its vivid portrayal of the landscape and people of North Cork. Sheehan himself described Glenanaar as “the glen of slaughter, a deep ravine running directly north and south through a lower spur of the mountains that divide Cork and Limerick.”

Published in 1905, Glenanaar captured the heart of a region the Mallow-born priest knew intimately, after ten years serving as parish priest of Doneraile. Though Sheehan’s name is less often spoken today, his spirit still echoes through the Ballyhoura mountains, and this production by The Verdant Troupe promises to bring his words and characters vividly back to life, with warmth, humour, and humanity.

With around 70% of tickets already sold, organisers are encouraging early booking.

This is more than a performance. It’s food, music, and theatre woven together to honour North Cork’s rich creative heritage.

Presented in partnership with Cork County Council, this event is part of a shared vision to support and celebrate local culture.

With fine food, live music, and powerful storytelling, this promises to be one of North Cork’s most enchanting Christmas events — a true feast for the senses, and the soul.
