Freemount’s Haggart Bar and Grill Hits the Market in Latest Blow to North Cork Hospitality

Another chapter in North Cork’s hospitality story is turning, as The Haggart Bar and Grill, a much-loved restaurant and bar in the heart of Freemount village, has been placed on the market.

Opened and reimagined in 2020 by owners Don Stokes and Catriona Sheehy, the Haggart quickly became a favourite for locals and visitors alike. Known for its warm welcome, great food, and lively atmosphere, the venue built a strong reputation for quality dining, cocktails, and live music.

Its listing marks another challenge for the North Cork hospitality scene, which has seen several rural pubs and restaurants change hands or close in recent years. For potential buyers, however, it presents a rare chance to take over a well-established, fully fitted venue with a loyal customer base and a strong local identity.

Located on the Main Street in Freemount, between Charleville and Kanturk, the property offers a turnkey business opportunity with significant appeal. The building includes a modern bar and restaurant, a two-bedroom apartment, and a five-bedroom guesthouse that has operated successfully as an Airbnb, accommodating up to 11 guests.

Inside, the restaurant features a stylish fit-out by Chris McCreedy, whose work includes venues such as 101 Limerick, The Ashburn Hotel in Lurgan, and The Aviary in Dublin. The space includes a front bar and dining area, an expansive riverside section overlooking the River Allow, and a large commercial kitchen to the rear. An outdoor area with a marquee has hosted countless summer events and private functions.

The guesthouse, recently refurbished to a high standard, comprises five double rooms with shared kitchen and living facilities, making it ideal for short-term stays or group bookings.

Freemount’s central location, drawing customers from Charleville, Kanturk, and Mallow, has helped establish The Haggart as a social hub in the region.

Within a 25km radius, a population of over 25,000 people contributes to the steady trade that venues like The Haggart rely on.
