Duhallow Heritage Society to Host Talk on “The Disappeared” by Historian Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc

The Duhallow Heritage Society is inviting the public to an evening of historical insight and reflection with noted historian Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, who will present his talk, “The Disappeared: Forced Disappearances in Ireland, 1798–1998”, on Thursday, December 4th, at 8:00 PM in An Chultúrlann, Church Street, Newmarket.

Drawing on more than a decade of meticulous research, Ó Ruairc will explore the grim history of forced disappearances in Ireland, spanning over 200 years of political conflict. From the 1916 North King Street Massacre to events as recent as 2003, the talk promises a revealing look at the human and political dimensions of these tragedies.

Ó Ruairc’s work challenges popular myths surrounding the IRA, uncovering the ruthless use of forced disappearance during the War of Independence and Civil War, and placing it in historical context alongside the actions of British forces and later paramilitary groups. Attendees will hear how his research has led to the recovery of previously missing individuals, including Private George Chalmers, a British soldier executed and buried in 1921.

The evening will appeal particularly to those interested in Irish history, local heritage, genealogy, and the legacy of Ireland’s struggles for independence. Ó Ruairc brings the human stories behind the disappearances to life, highlighting the families left searching for answers and the lives tragically cut short.

Admission is €10 at the door, and refreshments will be provided. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to arrive early.
