Buttevant-based painter Julianne Guinee is making waves on both the art scene as she charts a path to national and international stardom.
On October 8, she will make her television debut on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year, where 13 artists compete to create live celebrity portraits under a strict four-hour time limit, with the winner crowned at London’s Battersea Arts Centre.
A former teacher, Guinee’s work blends 19th-century painting techniques with contemporary conceptual themes, often exploring motherhood, loss, and isolation, a reflection of her personal journey from teaching to painting following profound loss.
Earlier this year, Guinee was awarded the prestigious UCC Accenture Women on Walls commission, creating portraits of eight pioneering women for permanent display in UCC’s Aula Maxima.
The Women on Walls exhibition will be unveiled in November, and Guinee will also feature in a Virgin Media documentary set to broadcast in January.
