National Award and Major Funding Boost for Mallow Search and Rescue

Mallow Search and Rescue has received national recognition for its community work, secured a €49,500 grant towards a replacement boat and benefited from significant support from local businesses and fundraisers.

The volunteer unit was one of six recipients of a special award at the IPB Pride of Place Awards 2026, held at the National Conference Centre in Dublin.

The team said it was humbled to have its work recognised nationally and thanked Cork County Council and Claire Barr, municipal district officer, for their continued support.

The unit has secured €49,500 through the CLÁR programme towards a new boat costing approximately €65,000.

Mallow Search and Rescue says two older boats need to be replaced, with the grant providing a significant contribution towards upgrading its equipment and maintaining its service to the community.

The team thanked councillor Tony O’Shea for his assistance in securing the funding.

North Cork Electrical Ltd has donated a complete rooftop solar installation to the unit, with the aim of reducing electricity costs and helping support its operations into the future.

The company met with volunteers to learn more about their work and the potential benefits of the installation. Lower running costs could help the organisation direct more resources towards its core activities.

The Kilcorney Cheval group, working with West Cork Cheval, also announced a fundraising event in aid of Mallow Search and Rescue.

The non-profit initiative brings together horse riders and trap drivers to raise money for local causes. The event was advertised to depart from Kilcorney church car park at 12.30pm, with the public welcome to attend.

The unit has also received a Little Island Business Award (LIBA) in recognition of its community service. The award was presented at a ceremony at Garryvoe Hotel, where recovery diver Ian accepted it on behalf of the team.

Mallow Search and Rescue thanked Caitríona Twomey for the nomination and expressed its appreciation to the organisers and everyone involved.

The national award, boat funding, solar installation and local fundraising reflect the broad support behind the unit as it works to upgrade its equipment and continue serving the community.
