Mallow and Kanturk are among four Cork towns where new opportunities have opened for people interested in joining the county’s retained fire service.
Cork County Council is currently recruiting retained firefighters for stations in Mallow, Kanturk, Mitchelstown and Millstreet, offering local residents the chance to become part of the emergency response network that protects communities across North Cork.
The role is demanding but rewarding, with successful applicants receiving extensive training in firefighting skills, first aid, road traffic collision response and other essential areas before taking up active duties.
Applicants must be over 18, in good health and of good character. Retained firefighters must normally live and work close to the station they serve, ensuring they can respond quickly when called upon.
For those joining the service, the starting annual retainer payment is €17,021 for the first 12 months, increasing with length of service up to a maximum of €20,454 after eight years. Additional payments are available for attending drills, responding to callouts and supporting community fire safety initiatives.
Firefighters attend regular station-based training drills three times each month, with members required to maintain a strong attendance level. The role also includes a clothing allowance and payment arrangements through Cork County Council.
Before appointment, successful candidates must complete a pre-employment medical assessment and fitness test, with further testing available if required.
For communities like Mallow and Kanturk, retained firefighters play a vital role, often being among the first responders arriving at incidents, supporting neighbours, businesses and families when they need help most.
