Doneraile’s Ben Buckley will spend this summer playing with West Texas FC in the USL2 League as he continues his football development in the United States.
The Cork defender, who is currently studying at Mercyhurst University, will join the Texas-based side for the upcoming USL2 summer season. Buckley does not graduate from Mercyhurst until 2027 and will return to campus this August to complete his senior (fourth) year of college.
His move to West Texas FC follows a similar path to last summer when he remained in Erie to play with the Erie Commodores in the NPSL during the college off-season.
Buckley has enjoyed strong success during his time with Mercyhurst University. The Doneraile native captained the side and was recognised for his performances with NEC Second Team All-Conference honours in both 2024 and 2025, while also helping lead the team to the NEC Regular Season Championship in 2024.
West Texas FC recently announced Buckley as part of their squad for the upcoming USL2 campaign, highlighting his defensive qualities and leadership experience.
West Texas FC head coach Scotty Murray welcomed the addition of the Cork defender.
“Ben’s an elite defensive signing for us. Being a Division 1 captain, Ben’s already proven himself at a high level of collegiate soccer. He’s a strong, physical presence at the back and a guy I know I can count on to help solidify the backline this summer,” Murray said.
A former player with Cobh Ramblers in the League of Ireland, Buckley is known for his strength in the air, his physical defending and the leadership he brings to teams.
Buckley’s journey from the pitches of Doneraile to continuing his development in the United States has been marked by dedication and hard work. His summer move to West Texas FC provides another opportunity to gain valuable experience before returning to Mercyhurst University to complete his senior year ahead of his expected graduation in 2027.
His progress continues to be followed with pride back home in Doneraile and across North Cork, where many wish him every success for the upcoming USL2 season and the next stage of his football career.
