Local Spirit Celebrated at Mayor’s Awards 2026

Communities across North Cork were proudly represented at the Mayor’s Community Awards 2026, held at County Hall, as outstanding volunteers and organisations were recognised for their dedication and service.

Councillor Gearóid Murphy, who nominated both Mossy Buckley and Mallow Musical Society, said:
“I was delighted to nominate the Mallow Musical Society and Mossy Buckley for the Mayor’s Community Awards this year. It was great to be with them tonight in County Hall, where they were honoured for their voluntary work and services to the community. Special congratulations to Mossy, who won the Northern Division Individual award category. Well done to Mossy and Mallow Musical Society!”

Among the Northern Division winners was Western Duhallow Men’s Shed, established by Kiskeam Development Association to provide a safe and welcoming space for men at risk of social isolation. What began as a local initiative has grown into a vital hub serving Kiskeam, Ballydesmond, Boherbue, Cullen, Knocknagree, Glash, Newmarket and surrounding areas, offering connection, shared skills and camaraderie.

Ballyhooly Community Sportsfield Ltd was also honoured for more than four decades of commitment to sport and recreation in North Cork. From its beginnings as a farmers’ field, the facility has developed into one of the region’s leading community sports complexes. Recent years have seen significant investment, including upgrades to pitches, floodlighting, biodiversity works and improved accessibility, ensuring the amenity continues to serve all ages year-round.

Individual recognition in the Northern Division went to Mossy Buckley, whose voluntary work has made a lasting impact across Mallow, Cecilstown and Castlemagner. From supporting Mallow Tidy Towns and the River Valley Residents’ Association to restoring the historic Castlemagner water pump, launching heritage signage at Lohort Castle in Cecilstown, maintaining local graveyards, and fundraising for Penny Dinners, Mossy’s hands-on dedication has strengthened neighbourhoods across North Cork.

In the Southern Division, Rylane Community Park Association was recognised for its transformative regeneration project. Since forming in 2016 to address the lack of local amenities, the group has delivered a multi-sport pitch, fully accessible playground, and floodlit all-weather Astro facility, with a new Community Centre currently in development.

The awards ceremony highlighted the extraordinary voluntary spirit that continues to shape communities across Cork County, celebrating individuals and organisations whose efforts make a real difference locally.
